Last week during a group therapy session with the street connected Children, we were discussing emotions. The topic of understanding emotions and learning how to expressing them healthily is a subject that we regularly revisit with the children that we are working with.
The reason that we do, is because each of this children comes into contact with traumatic events on a regular basis. They can become desensitised to emotions such as fear, sadness and loneliness. They experience these emotions so often that it becomes their “normal”. Helping children find a voice to share, provides them an opportunity to remember what is really important to them.
During such a session last week, this 12 year old, brave boy, disclosed his sadness to the group. He was sad because he missed his family.
What a privilege for our team to have such insight and even more of a privilege to be able to offer help!
This week he is reunited with his family, a family who love him and have missed him. Our life changing social workers will be working closely with this incredible family for as long as they need us, as they restore relationship and learn to be united once more.
